Two forward, One back....

Who ever said this was going to be easy.... no one I guess...

The day started out well, all the girls seemed to be doing great and enjoying their new "triplet" crib. The girls have been cared for by the same great nurse for the past 3 days and all seem to be getting along famously. This too is a great comfort for us, knowing that the staff are becoming really familiar with each of the girls.

Caitlyn, unfortunately has had a rough day today - as I mentioned, all the girls were doing well this morning; however, Caitlyn began to have low oxygen levels quite frequently. She was put on some air support with nasal prongs and her caffeine was increased again. The combination seemed to help. Given the girls' recent history with the meningitis scare, the team did not want to take any chances. Caitlyn was showing too many signs that she was not picking up quickly enough so they went ahead and did a full work-up to make sure she does not have another infection. This sadly included another spinal tap and starting an IV for antibiotics. She's been put back on 2 antibiotics and will be on these for probably about 5 days. 

So far, the spinal fluid looks quite good and does not resemble a picture of meningitis. It will be a couple more days before we know for sure however, just with the initial treatment of antibiotics, she was already showing more movement and spark. She's been put back into her own isolet but for now none of the girls are back on isolation. We're crossing our fingers and toes that Heather and Emily won't follow in their sister's path this time.

Speaking of E and H....they are doing great! If you'll allow me to brag, they are all so beautiful! We had great chats today, both Emily and Heather were WIDE awake and very active. The nurse invited me to hold both girls - of course after not being able to see them for a week, and not having held them for 2 weeks,  I jumped at the offer. How amazing to hold both of them at the same time...Heather likes to spread her wings and mark her territory with her arms - Emily seems content to snuggle down and get comfortable in the space created for her....both girls were a delight to hold and they settled quickly into a deep slumber. What joy and a wonderful belated Mother's Day gift....it could only have been topped by having Caitlyn included in the cuddle. 

It's so hard to leave them at the end of the day especially when there are concerns...we can't wait to have them home and healthy so we can really begin our new (chaotic) reality together...
