Another day of touch and go for Caitlyn -- this girl has had a lot thrown at her today but her spirit is strong and feisty.
The doctors are not sure exactly what is causing Caitlyn's problems - mainly she stops breathing for a period of time (seconds) and then her oxygen levels plummet. She has been worked up for infections and now it is just a matter of waiting for the final results to come in and reveal what, if any, bugs are the culprit(s). Meanwhile, Caitlyn continues to have frequent episode of low oxygen some of which she needs stimulation to get back to a healthy level. If she continues this pattern, chances are that she will need a breathing tube to help her out for a while. That would require a trip back to the Foothills hospital...
When I left her (reluctantly) tonight, she was relatively stable and actually showing some increased signs of activity - kicking arms and legs, crying when the nurses were busy with her etc...these are good signs!
As I said, the doctor's are not really certain why this is happening but they're trying to support Caitlyn in every way possible. Part of this effort was giving her a blood transfusion as her hemoglobin (the red blood cells that carry oxygen) were low. She seemed to be tolerating this very well when I left tonight and hopefully, this might boost her energy a bit. So, cross your fingers and toes for her that the night will go smoothly for her...
Emily and Heather showed great fortitude today - both offered wonderful wakeful periods and we all enjoyed some brief but quality cuddle time this evening. When the chips are down, I highly recommend cuddling up to one or more cute babies -- it's very good for the soul!
Needless to say - everyone is exhausted and hopefully will achieve some good and restorative sleep tonight...
